On July 20, 2012, a mass shooting occurred inside a Century 16 movie theater in Aurora, Colorado, during a midnight screening of the film The Dark Knight Rises. Dressed in tactical clothing, James Eagan Holmes set off tear gas grenades and shot into the audience with multiple firearms. Twelve people were killed and seventy others were injured, 58 of them from gunfire. The Aurora Theatre Shooting (aka" The Midnight Movie Massacre" ) took place on Friday, July 20th, 2012 following our hero, James Holmes, taking it upon himself to liberate the citizens of Gotham City through an act of mass pwnage.

But the thrill of the movie's release has been utterly dashed in the wake of the horrific shootings during a screening in Aurora, which a lone gunman opened fire on the audience, shooting some 50 people, 12 fatally, authorities say.

Crime scene investigators counted 240 ballistic impacts during their investigation of the Aurora Movie Theater Shooting. Other changes after Aurora have come at the local level. Movie theaters around the country tightened security immediately after the theater shooting. Some banned costumes and masks, dispatched police officers to major movie theaters showing The Dark Knight Rises, and began offering active shooter training for movie theater employees.
